QUEBEC (CelebrityAccess) – Quebec country singer Renée Martel died on Saturday. The news was announced by his agent. Productions Martin Leclerc, via The Montreal Gazette, said she died at Honoré-Mercier Hospital in Saint-Hyacinthe from severe pneumonia unrelated to COVID-19. She was 74 years old.
Born in Drummondville and nicknamed “the queen of Quebec country music”, Martel is the daughter of two singers and was introduced to music at an early age. She hit the charts in the 60s with hits such as ‘Liverpool’ and ‘Johnny Angel’. In the 70s and 80s, she experienced a revival with the hits “Prends ma main” and “Un amour qui ne mourra pas”. In 2019, she announced a tour explaining that it would be her last. It was discontinued due to a diagnosis of breast cancer. She announced her retirement in 2019 but released more albums in the 2000s. In October this year she was due to start a tour with singer Paul Deraiche in early March 2020.
During her long career, she has received numerous FELIX awards and the Lucille-Dumont award. A stamp in his honor was issued by Canada Post in 2014.
